Use of ' that ' in different ways ,

1)'That'  is used as a Determiner


It is generally used to indicate one object which is away from you. Then you can use it. And also the plural form of that is " those''.

That is my friend Michael over there.

That is a pencil over there.

Those paintings are done by me.

Those cars are missing one day.

Those Markets are closed today due to covid 19 as it is growing up in India.

That is my house next to the temple.


2) "That" is used as a Relative Pronoun to add tho clauses. In the place of that, you can also use ' which ' or ' who '.

 

Here, which is equal that (which=that)

Here are a few examples:

Yesterday, I bought an apple that was rotten was being sold by a shopkeeper.

Or yesterday, I bought an apple which was rotten was being sold by a shopkeeper.


Let's see now, That = Who


Bill gates called a boy that was new in the classroom.

OR

Bill gates called a boy who was new in the classroom.


3)' That' as an Object

'That' can be used as an object.


Examples:

Peter slapped that man Last night because he was late to join the class.

Ram knew that boy, he needed to hurry up.


4) 'that'  in a clause as a compliment:


It can be used in a noun clause and adjective clause as a compliment. A compliment supports giving extra information about the noun ar adjective.


Examples:


Shahrukh Khan is upset that his elder sister wants to drop out of degree College.


The Narendra Modi appreciates our efforts that have been brought in many donations.


He is certain that his son will be accepted in the national championship game


5)'That' Clause as Subject of a Sentence which is not often used in our daily lives because it's somewhat formal. However, let's see a few examples to understand how it's used.


Examples:


That it is too difficult to perform is hard to understand.


That rockstar often feels miserable is very upsetting.


That our master tells us to do two hours of homework every single day by sitting at home day is crazy!


6) The Fact That: is often used while talking to someone as a subject, it is much more common to start a sentence with ' the fact that'.


Examples:


The fact that she wants to see, you should make her happy for that.


The fact that a lot of people is still unemployment proves what a difficult economy it is going on.


The fact that I  passed out my test shows how much I  have improved my skills


Compound Conjunctions with 'That'


There are plenty of compound conjunction words that connect with ' that'.

These expressions are often used in formal English.

Here are: (in order that), (providing that), (so that), (in case that),(now that), (given that)


Let's take a look at examples:


Sam bought a computer yesterday so that he might speed up his typing.

It means he wants to improve his typing speed, that is why he brought a computer by purchasing.


Ram told him she would get married with him providing that( condition) he received a job.


I am happy now that(since) I have bought a new house and moved into that.


After Reporting Verbs, we can use it :

Examples,

I said that she was in a hurry. That's why she took off immediately.


Hatim told me that he wanted to move to Kolkata for his friends in order that he could meet him and take a couple of hours.


The boss said that the company was not doing very well nowadays. So the Company's policy needs to be changed to fix these problems as soon as possible.


After Adjectives, you can use 'that'.


I am happy that you received a joining letter to join the company.


She is very sad that her friends are about to go to New  York in the next month.


I am anxious that you have passed the test in which you participated.


As an object in relative clauses:


It's very common to drop ' that' while it is the object of the relative clause. 


She called the boy (that) she came across on the train last day.


He bought the chair (that) he had seen at the Market while coming home


I wish to read the book (that) my parents recommended.
